Breaking into Cyber Security: Charan Kumar’s Success Story
Here’s how Charan, a mechanical engineering graduate with no prior IT background, successfully started his career as a Cyber Security Analyst at Riskard Enterprise Solutions after completing his cyber security course from SKILLOGIC:
Q1. Can you tell us about your background before cyber security?
I am from Andhra Pradesh and currently living in Bangalore. I completed my graduation in Mechanical Engineering. After finishing my degree, I developed a strong interest in cyber security, so I enrolled in SKILLOGIC’s cyber security program. With the training and guidance I received, I successfully got placed in Riskard Enterprise Solutions in Hyderabad.
Q2. Coming from a mechanical background, what attracted you to cyber security?
In today’s generation, cyber security plays a crucial role because of the increasing cyber attacks and malicious activities. This rising demand and the importance of protecting data inspired me to build a career in this field.
Q3. How was your learning experience at SKILLOGIC?
I chose offline classes because I wanted direct interaction with the faculty. My trainers, Fatima and Abbas, helped me gain knowledge and conducted multiple mock interviews. Initially, I was nervous, but after attending mock sessions, my confidence improved a lot.
Even though I traveled around 4.5 hours daily to attend classes, I felt it was worth it because I could concentrate better and learn deeply.
Q4. Were the classes more theory-based or practical?
The classes were a good balance of theory and practical sessions. Every day I learned something new, especially about tools, which kept me motivated. After class, I used to practice at home for 1 to 1.5 hours daily, which helped me understand concepts better.
Q5. How did you clarify your doubts while practicing?
I noted down my doubts while practicing at home and discussed them with the trainers the next day. They were also available on WhatsApp and responded quickly, which was a huge support for me.
Q6. How important is practice after class?
Practice is very important. Without practice, concepts can be forgotten. Spending even one extra hour a day helped me strengthen my skills and prepare for real-world scenarios.
Q7. Tell us about your internship experience.
During my internship, I worked as a Security Analyst intern, where I identified vulnerabilities, helped the team mitigate them, and monitored live network traffic using tools like Splunk and QRadar. My colleagues were very supportive, and I learned a lot in those three months.
Q8. How did mock interviews help you?
Mock interviews played a major role in building my confidence. In the beginning, I was extremely nervous, even though I knew the concepts. With each session, I improved, and by the time I attended real interviews, I was confident. In fact, company interviews felt easier than the mock ones!
Q9. How was your experience with the placement team at SKILLOGIC?
The placement team supported me well by sharing multiple opportunities. I got interview calls from companies in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hyderabad. After each interview, they gave me valuable feedback, which helped me improve for the next one.
Q10. Did you crack the job in your first interview?
No, I attended a couple of interviews before getting selected. The feedback from both the placement team and interviewers helped me understand my mistakes and improve.
Q11. Can you describe your successful interview process?
There were two rounds. The first was a technical round where I had to answer questions and real-time scenarios related to cyber security. The second was an HR round with more technical and situational questions. I answered confidently and cleared both rounds.
Q12. What advice do you have for candidates struggling with resume shortlisting?
The placement development team at SKILLOGIC provides resume templates and guidance. They review your resume, suggest changes, and ensure it highlights the right skills. Once your resume is well-structured, opportunities will definitely come.
Q13. What advice do you have for non-technical graduates entering cyber security?
Coming from a non-IT background is not a barrier. If you have the intention and dedication to learn, you can definitely succeed. Cyber security is a booming field, and the demand for professionals is growing every day.
