Hari Charan’s Journey: From Learner to Cyber Security Associate
Let’s discover the learnings from his story.
Q1: What was your overall learning experience in the cyber security course with SKILLOGIC?
My learning experience was very positive. My mentor, Fatima, taught each module thoroughly and provided PPTs that helped me understand the concepts even during my own time. I also appreciated that even after the course ended, she continued to support me by revising subjects and clearing doubts. I even joined a second batch to reinforce my understanding. This extra guidance made a significant difference in my learning journey.
Q2: How did you manage your studies and practice outside of class?
I attended two-hour sessions daily, and after each class, I revised every module using the PPTs provided. I also supplemented my learning by watching YouTube videos and getting additional insights from my cousins who work in the cyber security field. This extra practice helped me absorb the material better and built my confidence as I learned new topics and tools.
Q3: How did you handle doubts and ensure you mastered each module?
There were 22 to 24 modules in total, and it was challenging to remember every detail. I frequently revisited the recorded sessions on the learning portal and noted down any doubts. During the second batch of classes, I used this opportunity to clarify my uncertainties directly with my mentor, ensuring that I had a solid grasp of each topic before moving forward.
Q4: How many hours did you invest per day for learning apart from the classes?
Besides the two-hour class sessions, I spent roughly an extra two hours revising and practicing, which helped me stay on top of the material.
Q5: Can you share your experience with the practical projects during the course?
During the course, I had the opportunity to work on projects using two tools: BSIT and Nessus. I explored these tools by extracting information from various websites and identifying vulnerabilities. Whenever I encountered challenges, I made notes and reached out to my mentor or my cousins for support. This hands-on approach not only helped me understand the tools better but also allowed me to gain practical experience in real-time cyber security scenarios.
Q6: What was your interview preparation process, and how did it help you succeed?
I prepared for the interviews by taking part in mock interviews organized by the SKILLOGIC team. I revised every module thoroughly and practiced with multiple mock tests, which helped me understand the pattern of both mock and real interviews. In my first interview, I wasn’t well-prepared and missed the opportunity, but that experience taught me the importance of thorough revision. For my subsequent interview, I prepared diligently for three days and was able to confidently answer questions about networking concepts, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies.
Q7: What lessons did you learn from your interview experiences?
My first interview taught me that preparation is key. I realized that without proper revision and understanding of the subject, I might miss out on opportunities. By focusing on revising the core concepts and understanding the types of questions that might be asked, I was able to shift my approach in the next interview. I learned that both mock and real interviews follow similar patterns, and practical, hands-on experience greatly helps in building the necessary confidence.
Q8: What advice would you give to freshers aspiring to build a career in cyber security?
My advice to freshers is to focus on the basics by mastering networking fundamentals and essential cyber security concepts. Embracing hands-on learning is crucial, actively work with the tools and technologies, and never hesitate to ask questions when in doubt. Persistence is key; even though the field can be challenging, consistent effort will help you overcome obstacles and debunk the myth that freshers can't secure placements. Additionally, make the most of mentorship by leveraging the guidance of trainers and industry professionals, as their experience is invaluable. Remember, if you’re passionate about cyber security, your enthusiasm and willingness to learn can take you far, even if coding isn’t your strong suit.
Q9: How did Skill Logic support your overall learning and career growth?
SKILLOGIC provided a strong foundation by teaching the basics of networking, like IP addresses, which are critical for understanding cyber security. The instructors not only delivered live sessions but also offered PPTs and access to recorded sessions through their learning portal. This comprehensive approach allowed me to revisit the material and strengthen my understanding. Their focus on practical sessions helped me get comfortable with the tools, which in turn boosted my technical confidence in the cyber security domain.
